Travellers

Paul, Ray already there.

Objective

Visit the Oktoberfest.

Keywords

Braustubel Weihenstephan.

Comments

More of a holiday than a beer trip; we still managed a few beer highlights.

Braustuberl Weihenstephan: (Freising)

Originally a monastery brewery, it claims to be the oldest in the world and with brewing records dating back to 1040, there are no challengers. Linked to the nearby brewing school, up to 10 beers are available dependent on season. Hell, Dunkel Export and Pilsner on draught as well as at least a couple of bottled wheat beers. With Freising at the northern end of the S-bahn line from Munich a brewery visit is well worth the 10 minute walk up the hill from the station.

Oktoberfest

Ended up in our customary position in the HB pigpen, which seemed to be entirely taken over by Italians. Finding a little space at the end of a table we held our ground against repeated attempts to expel us but after making friends with the biggest and ugliest one there eventually became accepted. Although the evening was enjoyable, the pigpen seemed to have lost some of its charm, or had we just had enough of Munich’s Oktoberfest? After a Turkish mixed grill we slept at Rupert's flat (friend of Ray's his parents lived in Moosburg) - a communal arrangement where three people had their own rooms but shared the kitchen and bathroom facilities.
